SummerXchange: East Aurora, IL

Dates: Friday, June 8, 2012 - Monday, July 30, 2012

Our neighborhood is filled with families who have come to America, mostly from Mexico, to make a better life for their children. Through this internship you will learn about the struggles and challenges the “stranger” must overcome in a foreign country. Only by spending time with and loving these “strangers” can we truly understand the plight of the immigrant and those living in working class poverty.
A large focus of the internship will be working with children and youth in the neighborhood . . . helping with a VBS camp, running informal sports gatherings in a neighborhood park, participating in our bilingual church. You will also spend time getting to know some of the other non-profits working in the neighborhood to see the importance of partnerships in community development work.

Internship Will Include . . .

Interacting with children and families in the neighborhood.
Researching and visiting organizations that support the immigrant.
Participating in a bilingual church.
Helping to run VBS, sports, arts, and/or other campus for neighborhood children & teens.
Keeping a journal.
Participating in our East Aurora Restoration Team activities.
Meeting with mentors and coaches.
Praying for and helping us dream about ways we can help restore our community.

Requirements

Conversational Spanish is very helpful, but not required. You need to enjoy working with children, and you must be self-motivated, initiative-taking, and comfortable building relationships with people different from yourself.
Come with an open mind and heart, and eager to join God where He is at work in our neighborhood!
